Let’s face it, a makeup trial for one of the biggest days of your life can be a daunting thing, right?! Are they going to understand the natural or heavy coverage you feel happiest wearing? Or will they understand your style and create something that works with that and reflects your big day? I’m here to lift the lid on what to expect when you have your bridal trial with me!
1. I Want to Find Out All About Your Wedding!
The very first thing I’ll ask about at your trial is your wedding (before I’ve even so much as glanced at my kit!) What’s your style like? Are you having the boho wedding of dreams or a totally sophisticated soiree? What about your flowers and the colour of your bridesmaids dresses? The more detail you can give me at this point, the better. It helps me to create an image of your wedding as a whole and I draw a lot of inspiration from the little details, which helps to create a look that works for you and your style. If you’ve got a 1920’s style dress on you’re hardly going to want a bronzed glamazonian goddess look so it’s important everything is in sync.
2. What do You Usually Wear for Your Day to Day and Evening Makeup?
It’s really important that I know a little about how you like to wear your makeup day to day. Everybody has their own preferences and there are certain elements of your makeup that can make you feel very weird if they’re not there. Let’s say you’re used to wearing a fully matte foundation with flicked eyeliner every single day, if I then come in and give you a soft natural eye with a glowing, light coverage foundation, chances are you’ll feel pretty rubbish and not remotely like yourself. And for me that’s one of the most important parts – that whatever look we create, you still f e e l like yourself! That’s not to say that I won’t push the boundaries and make suggestions for things I think will work, but ultimately the decision is entirely yours and I want you to feel every bit yourself – just the best version you (and you’re new hubby!) have ever seen!
3. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (or rather, the silly things you deem to be ugly and want rid of!)
I love finding out what your favourite facial features are and I’ll always play up to them so that you feel damn right gorgeous, picking colours and products that will enhance what ya momma gave ya! And whilst in an ideal world we would all love every single part of ourselves, sadly I know that 99% of the time, we have real hang ups about certain features. Whilst the majority of these hangs up are in our head, I like to know about them because we can use makeup to manipulate or hide some of these areas. There’s not many ‘issues’ that a bit of clever makeup can’t fix. Small, narrow-set eyes? Don’t worry, some clever eyeliner and lash placement and you’ll have popping peepers in no time!
4. Picking the Products
If you don’t already know your skin type – get to know! Picking products based on your skin type means you’ll not only get the best finish, but the strongest lasting power too. I swap the products I pick based on your skin type and will often use a variety of products aimed at different skin types, to get the desired finish. For example – If you have dry, spot prone skin on your cheeks but your forehead and eyelids (yes, that is a thing ladies!) get greasy within about 10 minutes, you’re not going to want the same products all over. It just won’t work…unless of course you want that glow! Your desired finish on your makeup also plays a big part in the selection process, as do your concerns for your bridal makeup. If you like a dewy finish but are worried it’ll slide off by 4pm, maybe I’ll steer clear of facial oils opting for a mattifying primer instead, paired with a glow inducing foundation. Feedback on this is particularly important. What was it like at the end of the day? Occasionally I may need to alter elements for the big day to ensure it’s perfect for you and exactly what you dreamed of. And that brings me on to my final point…
5. Be Honest!
It’s so important to be honest with me – if something’s not to your liking please, PLEASE be honest and let me know! I never take offence and I promise you I don’t think you’re criticising my work. Makeup is so intrinsically linked with confidence and how we feel and I want nothing more than to get it 100% perfect for you. More often than not if something doesn’t feel right, it is just the smallest change to make it feel perfect, so you must speak up! Likewise, I’ll be honest with you – if I think a certain colour is going to really elevate your look, I’ll let you know! It doesn’t mean you have to take my advice if you don’t like it after trying it, but it’s good to push your usual look -after all, it is one of the biggest days of your life!
I hope you’ve found this useful in understanding how your makeup trial works and how I get to creating a look that’s unique to you. All my weddings are super special and to all you babes coming up in 2018 – I can’t wait to get creating your perfect bridal look!
